Team Arctic Takes Two in Hayward, Wis.

Top Finishes, Championship Point Leads Highlight the Weekend

The adage “You can’t win ’em all” proved true for Team Arctic at the penultimate round of the ISOC National Snocross Series in Hayward, Wis. For the first time during the 2008-’09 season, Team Arctic didn’t score a victory in one of the men’s Pro or Semi Pro classes. Yet even without victories in the premier classes, Team Arctic left Hayward with wins in Pro Women and Sport Super Stock finals, and podium finishes in the big classes.

In the Pro Super Stock final, Garth Kaufman scored a second-place finish to put himself into a tie for the championship points lead with one race remaining. Teammates Ryan Simons and Matt Piche were close to standing on the podium with their fourth- and fifth-place finishes, with Simons pushing himself to third in the points chase. Kaufman’s fifth place was also the highest-placing Cat in Pro Open.

Despite not standing on top of the box, Team Arctic’s Semi Pros swarmed the two finals in dominating fashion. In Semi Pro Open, Dan Ebert and Christian Salemark finished two-three to keep their championship hopes alive. Salemark also nailed a second in Semi Pro Super Stock, with teammate Logan Christian taking fifth. And though he didn’t factor into the final podium positions, Cory Davis left Hayward with the Stock points lead.

“It was a mixed bag for us in the Pro and Semi Pro classes,” said Team Arctic Race Manager Mike Kloety. “Podium finishes are a huge accomplishment, and we look pretty good in the championship point races. But we also suffered some disappointment, namely Dan Ebert’s thigh injury in the Stock final and Carl Schubitzke’s heal injury in the Pro class.”

Not surprisingly, Hayward also hosted a couple of big wins for the team. The first came in the Pro Women final, where J.C. Hupe notched her second win of the national season ahead of April Moritz, with series point leader Carly Davis taking fourth.

The second win went down in the Sport Super Stock #1 final, where season star Cody Thomsen led a Team Arctic sweep of five of the top-six positions. Andrew Carlson busted out his best performance of the season, taking third in the Stock final and second in Sport Open.

The final ISOC National Snocross of the season is March 20-22 in Lake Geneva, Wis. Learn more at www.isocracing.com.
